City gets about $128,000 to clean up defunct plant
5/29/2014Toledo is getting a $127,825 federal grant to help clean up the former Chevrolet Transmission Plant at 3199 Maplewood Ave.
The 5.5-acre site was used for various manufacturing and commercial purposes from 1903 to 1993, including the manufacturing of auto transmission parts for nearly two decades, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said.
Most buildings were demolished in 1993, with the remainders torn down by 1999. The money will be used to remove two large underground storage tanks and address contaminated soil, the agency said.
The grant was one of 264 nationally totaling $67 million that were awarded to 171 communities.
The money comes from the U.S. EPA’s brownfields program, which aims to put dormant industrial sites back into use.
