Ohio couple celebrates 72nd anniversary, share secret to long, happy marriage

ATHENS, Ohio — An Ohio couple in their 90s who recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary say they’re still happy together and can’t recall having any arguments over the years.

Charles and Opal Townsend of the village of Buchtel in southeast Ohio say they’ve been together so long, they can’t even remember how they met.

But 92-year-old Charles Townsend easily recalls the day they exchanged their vows: June 10, 1942.

The Athens Messenger reports that Tuesday marked the couple’s 72nd anniversary, which they celebrated at Kimes Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Athens.

Ninety-year-old Opal moved there two years ago after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.Charles followed his best friend and wife there a year later.

Charles shared the secret to his long, happy marriage: love and hard work.
