State Highway Patrol: 12 killed in Ohio traffic crashes during long Fourth of July weekend

COLUMBUS — The State Highway Patrol says a dozen people died in traffic crashes in Ohio during the long Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The patrol says four of the 11 crashes related to vehicles operated while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The reporting period included crashes from Thursday to Sunday.

During that time, troopers also arrested 749 people for impaired driving and 318 on drug-related charges. The patrol says it issued more than 6,400 citations this year for safety belt violations and almost 3,000 citations for aggressive driving.

Six people died in five crashes during the holiday last year, though the period covered just two days. One crash was alcohol-related.
