HAMILTON, Ohio — A southwest Ohio sheriff says a woman attacked by a family dog has died.

A statement from Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones says a witness called 911 on Monday afternoon and said a dog was attacking a woman. Jones says 59-year-old Cindy Whisman was attacked in the backyard of her Madison Township home and suffered multiple injuries to her face, neck and body.

Jones says the woman’s husband and a child were at the home during the attack but weren’t injured.

Jones says authorities aren’t sure what prompted the attack and are still investigating.

The county coroner’s office plans an autopsy Tuesday.

Authorities say the breed of the dog, described as a family pet, hasn’t been determined. The dog is being held at the Animal Friends Humane Society.
