Ohio officials warn consumers of phone calls from government impostors demanding money
8/10/2014CINCINNATI — State officials say Ohio residents should be on the lookout for government impostor scams.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters say scam artists are calling consumers posing as government and law enforcement officials and demanding money. The attorney general’s office says scammers can alter a number on a consumer’s caller ID to look like a local call.
Since the beginning of June, DeWine’s office has received more than 20 reports of calls from impostors pretending to represent government offices. The attorney general says legitimate government offices will not threaten consumers and demand payments.
Consumers who receive calls demanding they pay a debt should request written information. Officials say a caller refusing to provide written information indicates a likely scam.
