CLEVELAND — A teen who was struggling in the water at a Lake Erie beach and a woman who tried to save him both drowned, Cleveland authorities said.

The victims were believed to be with a large gathering Sunday afternoon at Euclid Beach Park on the city’s east side, police said.

Witnesses said Bryce Canady, 15, of Cleveland Heights, was having trouble swimming when Kelly Walker, 34, of Cleveland, jumped in and tried to save him.

Others on the beach were able to pull Walker from the lake and a dive team soon after found the teen in the water. Both were later pronounced dead at hospitals. Authorities did not know if they were related.

The area of the public beach where the drowning occurred does not have lifeguards, and there are no signs to warn visitors that they are swimming at their own risk, said Sue Allen, a Cleveland Metroparks spokeswoman.
