CINCINNATI — University of Cincinnati officials have approved a total of $37 million to renovate a former dorm and design a building that will be used partially as a residence hall.

Officials say the projects are needed because of increased demand for student housing amid rising enrollment.

The school’s board of trustees has approved $35 million to renovate Scioto Hall to hold 450 student beds and another $2 million for design of the new building.

The state hasn’t calculated official enrollment numbers. But a UC spokeswoman says UC projects overall enrollment for the fall will be a school record at 43,600.

The university reports increased demand from upperclassmen for on-campus housing.

UC data shows more than 4,900 UC students live on campus or in off-campus housing the university leases on their behalf.
