COLUMBUS — Columbus police say resubmitted DNA evidence led to an arrest in a previously unsolved 1996 rape.
A police report says a 34-year-old woman was grabbed by the throat, threatened with a box cutter and raped on the city’s near east side on June 23, 1996. The suspect was never identified.
Cold-case detectives reopened the investigation in July, and evidence was resubmitted to the Ohio Bureau of Investigation for analysis. A DNA profile developed from the evidence was entered into a federal database, and that profile matched suspect Leroy Davis.
Davis was arrested Thursday at his residence and is in jail in Columbus awaiting arraignment. Records didn’t say if he had an attorney yet.
