Patience pays as teams ride market, bounce around in ranks
3/6/2012Beth Huffman’s students eagerly have been tracking their rise in The Blade’s School Stock Contest.
One team, Yngmny, has been climbing the ranks since the contest kicked off Feb. 3. It bounced from 24th place to ninth to 13th in the first three weeks of the contest.
The all-girl group of seventh-graders from Byrnedale Elementary School in Toledo finally broke into fourth place during the fourth week of the contest. The team’s portfolio increased from $42,670.42 to $44,506.18 last week and contains Apple Inc., Aeropostale Inc., Priceline.com Inc., and McDonald’s Corp.
“I’ve tried to tell them all along that the stock market goes up and down every day, week, and minute the stock market is open,” Ms. Huffman said of her students. “This team has picked pretty good stocks. I’ve told them all along, anything can happen. They’re feeling comfortable they will finish in a reasonably good position.”
Stocker, a team of sixth-grade boys from St. Pius X in Toledo, is back in first place after falling to third last week.
Mary McCoy shares cautious optimism with her seventh-grade math students at Arbor Hills Junior High in Sylvania. Teams made up of Ms. McCoy’s students are in second and third place and have consistently been near the top of the standings.
The second-place team, raid5, jumped from $44,936.30 to $45,365.59 and has holdings in Apple, Nike Inc., Abercrombie & Fitch Co., and Monster Beverage Corp. Bop1 is in third place with a portfolio that didn’t gain as much, increasing from $43,779.83 to $44,703.91. It has holdings in Apple, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc., PUMA AG Rudolf Dassler Sport, and Panera Bread Co.
“They know that the stock market is a day-by-day thing, and it can go up or down,” Ms. McCoy said. “They have got to wait out the storm — now it’s the tough part. Do they stick with their choices they have because they have done so well, or do they change?”
The participants have one chance to change any or all of their stocks March 16.
Students from 153 teams in classrooms from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan are participating in the contest, which runs until April 27. The aim is to create the portfolio that increases the most in value, which will win at the conclusion of the contest.
Each team was given a hypothetical $40,000 for its portfolio and picked four stocks worth at least $5 a share. The $40,000 was allocated evenly among the stocks.
The winning team receives $250 for the students and $250 for the school. Second place will receive $250 for the school, and third place gets $100 for the school. The prizes can be cash or gift certificates.
The contest is sponsored by The Blade’s Newspaper in Education program, Fifth Third Bank, and the University of Toledo, which calculates the results.
The standings haven’t changed significantly because the stock market has been somewhat stable, said Matthew Faltys, vice president of Fifth Third Bank of Northwest Ohio. When things start to heat up on Wall Street, the standings will change more.
“The market was up about a third of a percent for the week, so there wasn’t a lot of movement,” Mr. Faltys said. “It all came down to stock picking.”
