PBS has scored two cultural phenomenons with the British imports Sherlock and Downton Abbey, and local affiliate WGTE-TV, Channel 30, is taking full advantage.
Sherlock, which reimagines the master sleuth (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his partner Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman) in modern times, makes its Season 3 debut later this month, but a limited number of the series’ local fans can get an advanced peek. WGTE is hosting a special sneak preview party Thursday at the station, 1270 S. Detroit Ave. WGTE will screen the new season’s first episode in its entirety beginning at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 and seating is limited to the first 100 guests, who are requested to RSVP by calling 419-380-4600 by 4 p.m. Wednesday. If you miss the party, Sherlock returns to local TV at 10 p.m. Jan. 19, with an encore showing at 9 p.m. Jan. 23.
As for Downton Abbey, WGTE is teaming with Toledo-Lucas County Public Library for four area events for fans of the British drama. Cathy Kamenca, the station’s TV program coordinator, will offer behind-the-scene peeks of Downton Abbey as well as prizes.
The schedule kicks off Feb. 1, between 2 and 3:30 p.m., at the Waterville Branch, 800 Michigan Ave. (419-878-3055), followed by 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Holland Branch, 1032 S. McCord Rd. (419-259-5240), 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Sanger Branch, 3030 W. Central Ave. (419-259-5370), and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Oregon Branch, 3340 Dustin Rd (419-259-5250).
