Amazon offers discount to promote deals site

NEW YORK — Amazon.com Inc. said Monday it will sell $10 gift cards for $5 Tuesday to people who visit AmazonLocal.com, the online retailer's answer to deals sites such as Groupon and LivingSocial. Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, is trying to distinguish its local deals service from a bevy of competitors.

Mike George, vice president at AmazonLocal, said the company wants to draw in both new and existing customers with the gift card.

The cards are good for any Amazon.com purchase, although not on AmazonLocal.
