UT's Maier named All-American

Toledo's Mitch Maier, of Novi, Mich., has been named by Baseball America to its first team All-America squad. Maier is the first Rocket to ever earn All-America honors in baseball.

The 6-2 catcher and designated hitter was drafted in the first round and No. 30 overall by the Kansas City Royals in the Major League Baseball Draft on June 3, while also earning second team All-America recognition from CollegeBaseballInsider.com and Collegiate Baseball.

Maier, a native is joined on the first team by fellow Mid-American Conference selection Brad Snyder of Bellevue and Ball State.

Maier ranked first in the MAC and second nationally with a .448 batting average in 2003. He established school records in 2003 in batting average, hits (87) and RBI (61), and tied the record in doubles (16) and stolen bases (29). He also finished second in total bases (134), fourth in runs scored (59) and tied for ninth in walks (31).

Maier ends his collegiate career sporting a .414 average, the second-highest in the league's history. He also sits first in school history in hits (238), doubles (42), RBI (147) and total bases (370) and second in runs scored (152) and tied for third in home runs (26).
