UT's Simon becomes associate head coach

University of Toledo men's assistant basketball coach Bob Simon has been promoted to associate head coach, the second time he has had that title in his career.

“Bob has done an outstanding job in his three seasons with the program and has displayed tremendous loyalty,” head coach Stan Joplin said. “He has made a great impact in our recruiting, especially with the avenues we have opened in the Chicago area,

Simon, 40, joined the UT staff in 2000 after nine years at Wayne State, five as associate head coach. He is a 1989 graduate of Eastern Michigan, and earned his master's degree in sport administration from Wayne State in 1997.

COLUMBUS - Archie Griffin, the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner, has been appointed president of Ohio State's alumni association.

Griffin had been an associate athletic director at his alma mater. He will leave that position and take over the association on Jan. 1, association spokeswoman Linda Crossley said. He will replace Dan Heinlen, who is retiring Dec. 31 after 30 years in charge of the organization.

Griffin won the Heisman in 1974 and 1975 and owns the Ohio State record for rushing yards with 5,589. The Buckeyes won the Big Ten Conference title in each of his four seasons (1972-75).

He played eight seasons in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals before joining the Ohio State athletic department in 1985.
