Robinson ties Toledo record with 4th interception return for a TD

Safety Jermaine Robinson returned an interception for a touchdown on Saturday against Cincinnati, climbing to the top of the University of Toledo’s career record book with four.

Robinson, who is tied with Keon Jackson (2002-05), stepped in front of a pass by Munchie Legaux and raced 75 yards with 7:50 to go in the first quarter for the Rockets’ lone touchdown of the half.

All of Robinson’s touchdowns came in his junior and senior seasons. His pick six of 31 yards two weeks ago against Central Michigan cemented the win with 38 seconds to go.

Toledo, which has returned four interceptions for a touchdown, led the Mid-American Conference in picks entering the day with 10. Robinson’s three interceptions before the game were tied for the lead with two others.

Also picking off passes this season and returning them for a touchdown were Jordan Haden against Western Michigan and Mark Singer against Central Michigan.

UNIFORM CHANGES: The anticipated arrival of Toledo’s alternate jerseys has come. The Rockets wore gray tops and gray pants, tying the ensemble together with their third helmet of the season. This one, a blue model, incorporates the Toledo logo from the 1980s and mid 1990s, an intertwining of capital letters ‘U’ and ‘T.’ The Rockets usually don a different blue helmet and have twice worn yellow helmets.

A vote among the team’s seniors in the preseason determined the threads.

INJURIES: Defensive tackle Danny Farr missed his sixth game in a row with a knee injury, and Toledo was without three defensive line starters for the third straight week. Farr ran onto the field with his teammates before the game, albeit in street clothes.

Also, Cassius McDowell participated after injuring his leg last week. He entered the game in the second quarter, carrying for eight yards. The next play he lost a fumble.

Receiver Justin Olack played after sitting out last week with an arm injury.

BEARCAT FAITHFUL: After McDowell fumbled, a large sector of the crowd erupted in a chant of “Let’s Go Cats!”

An ample number of Cincinnati fans made the trek north to watch their undefeated and No. 21 ranked Bearcats. Their influence contributed to a Glass Bowl that was at near capacity.

STEWART OUT: Cincinnati was without arguably its best defensive player in end Walter Stewart, who missed the game with what the team called an “undisclosed upper body injury.” Stewart leads the Bearcats and is third in the Big East with five sacks.

He also leads UC with seven tackles for loss. Toledo coach Matt Campbell early in the week raved about ends Stewart and Dan Giordano.
