UT women golfers place 2nd in MAC

Rockets' Ruenreong named MAC freshman of the year

NASHPORT, Ohio — The University of Toledo finished tied for second place at the Mid-American Conference women’s golf tournament on Sunday.

UT’s Sathika Ruenreong was named MAC freshman of the year.

Ruenreong, the first Rocket to win the award, finished runner-up with a 9-over par 225 (77-75-73) and tied for the best round Sunday with a 1-over 73.

Toledo tied Eastern Michigan for second place at 73-over par (937), 28 strokes behind Kent State, which captured the conference title for the 15th straight year.

The finish matched the Rockets’ best at the tournament as well as Toledo’s third top three MAC showing in the last four years.

Ruenreong became the first UT women’s golfer to earn first-team MAC accolades since 2006 and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Joining Ruenreong on the All-MAC squad was junior Kate Hoops, who tied for 18th place at 23-over par 239 (82-78-79).

Bowling Green finished sixth, the program’s best finish since the 2002-03 season, and posted a team score of 957 — a school record at the tournament.

Lily Bartell fired a final-round 77 and led the Falcons with a 12th-place finish, carding a 234 (78-79-77) for the tournament. Shelby Wilson finished tied for 16th (238).

 

Fatinikun to workout with Kansas City

UT defensive lineman T.J. Fatinikun has accepted an invitation to participate in the Kansas City Chiefs’ rookie camp on May 9.

Fatinikun, a Perrysburg graduate, suffered season-ending injuries his junior and senior seasons and has not played since rupturing his Achilles Sept. 29 at Western Michigan.

 

3 leave women’s basketball team

UT women’s basketball players Michele Hayes, Kendyl Nunn, and Taylor Carver have left the program. Coach Tricia Cullop hinted several weeks ago Carver, who was not with the team at the end of the year, would be leaving. The departure of Hayes and Nunn means UT’s entire three-member freshman class is gone. Hayes, from Southfield, Mich., is moving home to be with her ill grandmother, Cullop said. Nunn, the coach said, left to seek a better fit elsewhere.

"We wish them well," she said. "They’re great people."

The Rockets acquired Spanish point guard Elena De Alfredo, who will be a freshman next season. Alfredo, who has yet to sign a letter of intent, averaged 12.3 points and two assists last summer in the U18 European Championships. She made 22 of 45 3-pointers (48 percent).
