  • At the command of my boss, I am to write in this space about a surprise on the UT football team. Unfortunately I can't top the one Matt Campbell whipped up during camp. If you haven't seen the video, see it here.

The Rockets coach a few weeks ago at practice threw out two players for fighting — a tussle their teammates would learn had been staged. Moments later, with Trent Voss and birthday boy Zac Kerin riding in the back, Campbell drove an ice cream truck onto the field to pass out frozen treats.

My surprise? About this time a year ago Florida prep standout Rodney Adams was set to stay home and play for the Gators. On Saturday he'll be at The Swamp representing the visiting team. Adams, second on the depth chart at outside receiver, was shunned by UF when it appeared he would not qualify. UT stayed in the picture, shepherding him through the NCAA turnstiles.

This low risk-high reward approach to recruiting has netted the Rockets several BCS-caliber players who will see the field against the No. 10-ranked Gators. Adams may be as talented as any. Word is he's explosive and with good hops.

Wish I could tell you more, but media are barred from practice. Next time I'll hide out in the back of an ice cream truck to catch a peak.
