Rockets lose verbal commitment from quarterback
1/27/2014The University of Toledo has lost the cornerstone to its football recruiting class a little more than a week before signing day.
Quarterback Travis Smith, the Michigan high school player of the year, has changed his commitment to Wake Forest. Smith, who went 47-0 at Ithaca High, including 41-0 as the quarterback, had been committed to Toledo since June. He is a three-star recruit and arguably was the top player in Toledo's class.
Perhaps contributing to Smith's change of heart is speculation Toledo could lose quarterbacks coach Scott Isphording to Ohio University. Isphording, who took charge in Smith's recruitment, is mulling over an offer to be the Bobcats co-Offensive coordinator.
Consider Smith's flip a parting gift to Toledo by former Bowling Green coach Dave Clawson. Clawson, now at Wake Forest, lost his last four games to the Rockets in the I-75 rivalry but secured a big get in Smith.
Signing Day is Wednesday, Feb. 5. As it stands, Toledo will not sign a quarterback.
