WHEELING, W. Va. — The Wheeling Nailers scored three first period goals en route to a 5-0 win over the Toledo Walleye on Sunday afternoon.

Toledo (26-30-6) came out with a fast start, out shooting the Nailers 5-3 in the first seven minutes. Wheeling took control from there, scoring three times. Things got very physical as both Mike Thomas and Phil Rauch found themselves involved in altercations.

“I thought we came out with the intensity needed to come away with a win,” said coach Nick Vitucci. “We had a couple of bad breaks that went against us and that got Wheeling started. We couldn’t reverse that once it got going.”

The Nailers held Toledo to just 11 shots through two periods, outshooting them for the game 38-23. Walleye goaltender Alec Richards finished with 33 saves.
