Goalie Carruth joins Walleye

Rookie goaltender Mac Carruth was assigned to the Toledo Walleye on Thursday.

Carruth had a 30-7-2 record with a 2.06 goals-against average for the Portland Winterhawks of the Canadian junior Western Hockey League last season.

Carruth was assigned to Toledo from Rockford of the American Hockey League.

Carruth, a 21-year-old native of Shorewood, Minn., played four years in the WHL. Carruth won 117 games for the Winterhawks over the last four seasons. He also led Portland to the WHL title last year. He won 30 postseason games for Portland and was named an all-star in the WHL last season.

Toledo has also released nine players from its training camp roster.

Five forwards were released on Thursday, including: Mud Hens third baseman Mike Cervenak, Joey Sides, Dustin Parks, Myles McCauley, and Nikita Poliakov.

Four defensemen were released: Nick DeMarchi, Ryan Wiley, Aaron Schmit, and Garrett Clarke.

With the moves, Toledo’s roster is now at 23 total players with 13 forwards, seven defensemen, and three goaltenders.

Toledo plays its only home preseason game of the year on Saturday against Kalamazoo. Tickets to the game are $5. All proceeds benefit the Walleye Wishing Well.
