Walleye can't keep pace with Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Walleye gave up three goals in the first period before responding with three of their own in the second period, but they fell to Orlando today.

The Solar Bears tallied two more goals in the second and added another in the third to double up Toledo 6-3.

Scott Arnold, Alden Hirschfeld, and Joe Sova scored for the Walleye. Travis Novak finished with two assists.

Goalie Jared Coreau gave up six goals on 26 shots and was pulled from the game in the third period. Mac Carruth made all nine saves in relief.

Toledo was outshot 14-7 in the first period and Orlando scored 1 minute, 49 seconds into the game. The Solar Bears added two more even-strength goals in the opening period.

But the Walleye rallied in the second period, outshooting Orlando 18-4.

Arnold scored 1:26 into the middle period to make it 3-1. Hirschfeld, a former Northview High School player, scored his first goal in a Walleye uniform to pull Toledo within 3-2.

However, Orlando scored the next two goals to go back up 5-2. Sova scored his first goal of the season for Toledo with 30 seconds left in the period.

The Solar Bears scored 50 seconds into the third period to take a 6-3 lead and Coreau was pulled from the Walleye net.

David Rutherford scored two goals for the Solar Bears.

Orlando outshot the Walleye 35-34.

Toledo fell to 4-4-1 this season, while Orlando improved to 5-4-1.

Toledo wraps up a three-game road trip to Florida on Monday in a rematch against Orlando. The Walleye defeated Florida 4-3 in overtime on Saturday.

The Walleye play at Fort Wayne on Friday before returning home on Sunday for a game against Reading.
