Walleye take down host Cyclones
2/4/2014CINCINNATI — The Toledo Walleye showed a bit of energy early and it carried to a 3-2 win at North Division-leader Cincinnati on Tuesday.
Goals from Aaron Clarke and Maxim Shalunov in the second period kick-started the team, which has outshot Cincinnati (26-14-2) 15-3 after the first period.
The Cyclones evened the score with goals from Jonathan Hazen and Adam Brace before the end of the stanza but Clarke neted his second of the contest with nine minutes, 13 seconds to go in the third period.
Clarke has 12 goals on the season. It was Shalunov’s nine of the campaign.
Goaltender Mac Carruth made 22 saves to get the win while counterpart Rob Madore gave up three goals on 32 Walleye shots.
Seven different Walleye finished with at least a point in the victory.
The Walleye (15-24-3) have won three of their last five after losing their previous four.
The Walleye were 0-for-2 on the power play while the Cyclones wnet 0-for-3.
The teams combined for just 10 minutes of penalties.
CLARK TRADED: The Walleye traded forward Emerson Clark, who led the team in penalty minutes, on Tuesday to Greenville in exchange for future considerations.
Clark, a rookie from Whitby, Ontario, appeared in 25 games this season with Toledo. At 5-foot-10 and 181 pounds, the feisty forward ranked second in the ECHL with 150 penalty minutes. Clark, who also is a standout lacrosse player, had four assists for the Walleye.
