Winter is expected to make a late-season comeback Thursday night and Friday in southeast Michigan.

The National Weather Service office in White Lake, Mich., has issued a Winter Storm Watch for 17 counties, including all of metropolitan Detroit and Monroe and Lenawee counties.

Six or more inches of snow may fall in parts of that zone late Thursday into Friday as a storm now intensifying over the upper Great Plains moves into the Great Lakes, the weather service said. Areas closer to the Ohio border could receive a longer period of mixed precipitation that would keep snow accumulations down, forecasters said.

“Difficult travel conditions” are predicted for the Friday morning commute into Detroit.

As of Wednesday evening, the National Weather Service office in Cleveland expected the same storm to bring a mix of rain and snow to northwest Ohio Thursday night and Friday, with little or no accumulation. But another weather system forecast to pass through Ohio Wednesday night could bring 1 to 3 inches of snow, the agency said.
