Monroe Co. struck by tornado
3/16/2012The National Weather Service has confirmed that a windstorm that struck central Monroe County early Thursday evening was a tornado.
The EF-0 twister, lowest on the agency's tornado rating scale, had a top wind speed of about 85 mph, a maximum width of 50 yards, and a ground path of about a half mile, the agency's Detroit office in White Lake, Mich., reported Friday afternoon.
Damage occurred along Ida Center Road just east of Lewis Avenue and included siding and shingles blown off a house, an overturned car, a destroyed shed, and trees blown down.
The tornado developed during a series of heavy thunderstorms that passed through southeast Michigan late Thursday afternoon and evening. A more destructive tornado is believed to have heavily damaged homes in a subdivision in Dexter, west of Ann Arbor in Michigan's Washtenaw County.
