Elvis will be in the building this weekend

Croswell Opera House will celebrate the music of Elvis Presley this weekend when it stages All Shook Up, featuring many of the enduring hits of the rock-and-roll king.

The show is set in 1955 small-town USA, where a mysterious, leather-clad guitar-playing stranger and a young girl who hopes for love and adventure help townspeople discover romance and the power of music. It stars Kristin Kukic and Ben Andre.

Performances are Friday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and Saturday at 8 p.m. It also will be staged Sept. 27 and Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. and Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets, which range from $15 to $35, can be purchased by calling 517-264-7469 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or at www.croswell.org. The Croswell Opera House is at 129 E. Maumee St., Adrian.


Children’s series

Toledo's budding dancers should grab their ballet shoes because they won't want to miss Angelina Ballerina The Musical Saturday at the Valentine Theatre, 400 N. Superior St.

Angelina, a little mouse who dreams of being a prima ballerina, and her friends Alice, Gracie, AZ, and Viki, and their teacher, Ms. Mimi, are thrilled when they hear a special guest is coming to visit Camembert Academy.

Angelina and her pals plan to perform ballet and more, including hip-hop, modern dance, and the Irish jig, for their famous visitor. But will Angelina be the star?

In addition to the critically acclaimed storybooks by Katharine Holabird and Helen Craig, Angelina Ballerina inspires children weekly on PBS in the CG-animated series Angelina Ballerina: The Next Steps.

“Angelina Ballerina The Musical” will be presented Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m. Tickets are $14 for adults and $10 for children. Shows are nearly sold out. For tickets and information, go to valentinetheatre.com or call the box office, 419-242-2787.

A free performance of the play Red by playwright and screenwriter John Logan will be presented by Actors Collaborative Toledo Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Little Theater at the Toledo Museum of Art. Set in the late 1950s, when artist Mark Rothko was commissioned to make a series of large works for the Four Seasons restaurant in New York City, the play considers some of the big questions of art, commercialism, and creativity.

The 90-minute show is directed by Barbara Barkan and features Paul Causman as Mark Rothko, with John Duvall and Joe Capucini.

Red was produced by the Donmar Warehouse in London in 2009, and on Broadway, where it received six Tony Awards in 2010, including best play.

The performance is free, but theater-goers should arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the show to obtain seats. Information: 419-255-8000.


‘The Pillowman’

Monroe Community Players Underground this week will present The Pillowman, a drama by Martin McDonagh, about a writer who is brutally questioned about his nightmarish short stories that bear similarities to a series of murders in his hometown. When the writer's brother also is questioned, theater-goers are brought into the world of the Pillowman. The play won the 2004 Olivier Award for best new play.

The Underground offers edgy shows via a “black box” experience in a 69-seat house. The group's Web site cautions that the play contains scenes of violence and adult themes and language.

Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Little Theater at Monroe County Community College in the Campbell Learning Resource Center Building C, 1555 S. Raisinville Rd., Monroe.Tickets are $15 and are available at the door. Information: 734-241-7900.


‘Hello Dolly’

Tickets now are on sale for the Theater League's presentation of the classic musical Hello Dolly! Oct. 24-27 at the Stranahan Theater. It will star Sally Struthers, the Emmy and Golden Globe winner who may be best known for her role as Gloria in the 1970s hit TV series All in the Family.
