News of Art: Art exhibit at Way library will salute veterans

A Veteran’s Art Exhibit will open with a 2 p.m. reception Sunday in Way Public Library, 101 E. Indiana Ave., Perrysburg. The reception will open with remarks by Jim Espich, chief operating officer of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services in Columbus. Delivering the keynote address will be retired Col. David W. Taylor, author of Our War: The History and Sacrifices of an Infantry Battalion in the Vietnam War, 1968-1971. The exhibit includes original visual and literary art by retired military personnel, and other pieces that honor veterans. It includes photography of Vietnam by David Ridenour, a collection by the late Ray Porter, who was in the first wave of Marines to invade Iwo Jima, and work by Kristen Dukat, Art Mancini, Dee Brown, J.D. Intricate and color-drenched altars that honor the dead at Dia de los Muertos will be on view from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Nov. 15 at La Galeria, 1224 Broadway. Altars have been constructed by artists, students of Spanish language, and others for this yearly celebration which translates to Day of the Dead, and is celebrated in Mexico and Latino communities. At 9 a.m. Saturday, the altars will be blessed, followed by a procession to Ss. Peter & Paul Church, 728 S. St. Clair St., for mass and a reception. From 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, a dinner with Mexican food and music will be in the Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center, 1225 Broadway. Dinner tickets are $40 for one/$75 for two. Made by Hand: Detroit’s Ceramic Legacy, featuring the city's famous Pewabic Pottery, continues through Jan. 12 at the Detroit Historical Museum’s Community Gallery, 5401 Woodward Ave. Founded in 1903, Pewabic Pottery produced architectural tiles, lamps, and vessels that often had iridescent glazes and were used in churches, libraries, schools, and public buildings.
