Young golfers recognized for success

THE Toledo Junior Golf Association, a nonprofit organization for junior golfers to gain tournament experience in a competitive playing environment, is celebrating its 45th year.
The four founding fathers of the junior golf program, which stresses “Play Well, Play Fair, Play Fast,” are Don Kotnik, Greg Fish, Doug Spencer and Dave Kasprzak. Running the program are Jim McGill, director, and Karen Stone, assistant director. The board president is Nick Szymanski.
The Toledo Junior Invitational Tournament and Banquet was at Inverness Club, the site of 11 championships, including four U.S. Opens and two PGA Championships.
Awards included:
■ The Frank Stranahan Boys Player of the Year: Jack Hanus.
■ The Sharon Keil Girls Player of the Year: Caroline Dayton.
■ The Paul Hahn Boys Sportsman Award, chosen by the junior players: Grant Sonnenberg.
■ The Karen Stone Girls Sportsmanship Award, chosen by the junior players: Francesca Sberna.
■ The Paul Szymanski Scholarship: Kathryn Roth.
■ The Dr. Edward J. Jacob Scholarship: Patrick Yost.
Membership opens next year on March 1. Tournament signup opens April 15. The season includes play at almost all of the best golf courses in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.
LOTT Industries Inc., in business for 62 years, celebrated its first anniversary as an independent provider of services to people with developmental disabilities. Lott’s founder, Josina Lott, was a pioneer of services for people with developmental disabilities.
Board chairman Jan Brown welcomed everyone at the reception and Tim Menke, CEO, explained the expansion of services beyond employment to assist employees reach their personal goals. Employees shared first-time experiences such as camping, roasting marshmallows, tubing down a river, horseback riding, and art classes. Live painted-lady butterflies were released to represent how Lott assists employees spread their wings and enrich their lives.
Seen were Lott board members Trish Branam, Roger Bresnahan, Maria Gonzalez, Ricardo King, and Shannon Lands. Brenda Donaldson, Allison Hammons, and Casey Holck also attended.
THE Jazz at the Rapid: Sunset Jazz and Art Festival presented by the Optical Shop by Georgeann Kohn in Grand Rapids, Ohio, is 2 p.m. to sunset Sunday on the downtown towpath area. Entertainment includes the Toledo School for the Arts Glass City Steel, Tim Tiderman and Organized, Ben Maloney, the 6th Edition featuring Kim Buehler, Lori LeFevre, and Lisa Young, and the Gene Parker Quintet.
Bring a lawn chair but leave your coolers at home. Adult beverages, soft drinks, and food will be available. Admission is free.
THE Blade’s 35th annual Northwest Ohio Rib Off presented by the Taylor Automotive Family, and sponsored by Budweiser, Tireman, Fin Feather Fur, Elizabeth Scott Community, TAS, the U.S. Army, and others starts at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Lucas County Fairgrounds.
Come for the mouth-watering, finger-licking ribs from pitmasters locally and from afar. And stay for the music. On Thursday, local band Distant Cousinz opens for Morris Day.
On Friday, vocal duo Ida Mae (Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean) opens for Michael McDonald. On Saturday, Kasey Tyndall opens for Lee Brice.
Sunday is free admission Family Day, sponsored by Elizabeth Scott Community. A kid’s zone, noon to 6 p.m., is $5 for wrist bands to enjoy inflatables, a climbing wall, an archery range, face painting, and more for children 12 years and younger.
The Band Steele plays at 3:30 p.m.
