University of Findlay wrestler pins success on Waite background

Senior Antonio Guerra is continuing his outstanding wrestling career at the University of Findlay.

The Waite High School graduate won all four of his matches as the University of Findlay wrestling team went 2-2 at the Lakewood Saint Edwards quadrangular.

Findlay defeated North Carolina State University and Iowa Central University while suffering defeats to the University of Iowa and Old Dominion University. Guerra, who wrestles at 157 pounds, is a two-time national champion.

Guerra then won matches against Ohio University and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in the Ohio University duals. Freshman Jeremy Espinosa, a Rossford graduate, also won two matches in the Ohio Duals.

The Roughnecks, as the Findlay wrestling team is known, were shut out in their matches at the duals against Pittsburgh and Ohio State.

Local high school graduates on the Findlay roster include: freshman Kris Bowser, a St. John's Jesuit High School graduate; freshman Rolando Corpus, from Bowling Green; senior Richard Goss, a graduate of Start High School in West Toledo; sophomore Matt Holland, a graduate of Perrysburg High School; freshman Chris Newton, a Central Catholic High School graduate in Toledo; junior Ali Nour, from Waite High School in Toledo; freshman Cory Ruffer, a graduate of Archbold High School, and freshman Jan Ulinski, a graduate of Eastwood High School.

Findlay will be in action this weekend at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis.

WRESTLING: Jacob Pezzin, who graduated from Swanton High School, is a member of the Heidelberg College wrestling team.

BASKETBALL: Sarah Howe, a Monroe High School graduate, was named player of the week by the Michigan Collegiate Athletic Association as her Tri-State University team split two games.

She scored 17 points and collected 9 rebounds and 6 assists in a loss to Manchester. She then scored 20 points with 7 rebounds and 2 assists in a victory over Anderson.

For the week, she shot 5-for-29 including 3-for-9 from 3-point range and was 7-for-8 on free throws.

FOOTBALL: Three area players participated in football at Bluffton University this fall, with senior Gordon Hagen, a Libbey graduate, completing his senior season.

Hagen, a linebacker, played in all 10 games this season, with 60 total tackles, one interception, and one recovered fumble. He was honorable mention HCAC.

Sophomore Jaron Thomas, a graduate of Woodward High School, played in four games and recorded two tackles. Sophomore Dan Chipka, a wide receiver who graduated from Anthony Wayne High School, played in two games.

Bluffton finished the season 1-9 overall and 1-6 in the Heartland Conference.

VOLLEYBALL: Lyndsay Miller, a University of Michigan senior from Ida, Mich., earned honorable mention All-Mideast Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Miller earned her first AVCA honor after one of her most successful seasons with the Maize and Blue. Miller recorded the most career kills by a U-M middle player and climbed to third place on U-M's all-time kills list this season, standing just three blocks shy of breaking U-M's all-time blocks record.

The three-time captain tied a career high with 20 kills against Illinois this season, while standing second on the team in hitting percentage and blocks.

Vicki Brown, a Start High School graduate, was one of three seniors on the University of Illinois volleyball team who were recently honored.

Brown has been a three-year starter at middle blocker, amassing 1,063 kills and 330 blocks. She has been named to seven straight All-Tournament teams, being named MVP of three. She was honorable mention All-Big Ten for the second straight season.

Megan Cherry, a Sylvania Township resident and St. Ursula Academy graduate, has completed her fourth year as a member of the volleyball team at Ohio Dominican University where she won four letters.

This year she was All-Conference Honorable Mention in the American Mideast Conference and All-Tournament Team at the Case Western Reserve tournament.

She was co-captain her senior year.
