Sylvania officials will plant a tree next week in front of the city Administration Building to mark Arbor Day and celebrate the city's 18th annual selection for Tree City USA recognition by the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Citizens who attend the brief event April 29, starting at 11:30 a.m. on the city hall lawn, will be invited to add their own shovelful of soil around the new tree's base.

"It's a time to celebrate trees and their value to us in so many ways," a city statement says.

Other area communities that were designated as Tree City USA for 2010 by the foundation include Archbold, Maumee, Oregon, Toledo, Wauseon, and Waterville.

Such recognized communities must have a tree board or department, ordinance, comprehensive forestry program, and Arbor Day observance or proclamation.
