A Sylvania church has been awarded a $28,000 grant that will be used to fund a lecture series about religion and science.

Sylvania United Church of Christ is expected to begin its Faith and Science Lecture Series in January, said Sheila Banerji, its youth ministry coordinator.

The grant, from the John Templeton Foundation, will be used to bring in theologians and scientists from around the country. The purpose of the series will be "to inform the congregation about religion and science and to start addressing questions that our students have," said Ms. Banerji, who holds a PhD in molecular biology and biochemistry from Northwestern University. "You have to have an integrated view of the world. That makes faith stronger. You don't have to discard one thing to believe another thing," she said.

She said the series also will include lectures by congregation members who, like her, are or have been scientists.
