Car bombs in northern and central Iraq kill 2

BAGHDAD — Officials say car bombings in northern and central Iraq have killed two civilians.

Police chief Col. Hussein Ali Rasheed says a suicide bomb blew up his explosives-laden vehicle in the ethnically-mixed town of Tuz Khormato today, killing one bystander and wounding 27. The town is located about 200 kilometers (130 miles) north of Baghdad.

Another police officer said a parked car bomb exploded in a commercial area in central Baghdad, killing one civilian and wounding five. The figure was confirmed by a medical official. Both spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

The attacks came a day after a series of attacks killed 31 people. More than 4,000 people have been killed since April, including 804 just in August, according to U.N. figures.
