Northern Ireland police: Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams to be released, file sent to prosecutors

ASSOCIATED PRESS

BELFAST, Northern Ireland — A senior Northern Ireland police officer says Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams is expected to be released from custody today.

The officer spoke to The Associated Press on condition he not be identified by name because he was not authorized to disclose the decision before its official announcement.

The officer said authorities would also send a file of evidence for potential charges to British prosecutors.

Police on Wednesday arrested the 65-year-old Adams to question him over allegations that he was the Irish Republican Army’s Belfast commander in 1972 and ordered the killing of a Belfast mother of 10.

Adams denies the allegations.
