Cleveland mayor introduces plan for gun offenders registry to quell violence
7/17/2014CLEVELAND — Cleveland’s mayor has formally introduced legislation to create a city gun offender registry to combat violence in the city.
The proposal by Frank Jackson is meant to give police and prosecutors the weapons they need to stop convicted felons from using guns to commit more crimes.
Jackson unveiled the legislation Wednesday along with other proposals such as prohibitions against transferring a firearm to a known felon or improperly discharging a firearm in a park or playground.
Additional measures would require people to report lost or stolen firearms and to tell police when they transfer firearms.
A pro-gun group calls the proposals redundant, unnecessary and possibly illegal.
