The new, 10,000-square-foot Hayes Center for the Arts at Tiffin University will be dedicated Thursday at 4 p.m.

The two-story glass and brick (sandstone and red) building dramatically increases the arts presence at this 116-year-old private college known for its business and criminal-justice programs.

The $1.6 million center includes two large art studios, a 1,200-square-foot gallery, a 500-square-foot meditation chapel with waterfall wall, a music-rehearsal room, and faculty offices, said Lisa W. Williams, head of TU's media relations.

It was designed to complement existing campus buildings and Ohio's landscape with a large, arched front reminiscent of a midwestern barn structure, said Michael Howell, head of art and director of the gallery.

TU's previous gallery was 300 square feet in Franks Hall.

"It's going to accentuate the true university environment where students are encouraged to explore a variety of areas of study that impact them as life-long learners," he said. "Art gives students a broader understanding of how people interact with other cultures."

The center is named for David and Patty Hayes, of South Toledo, whose donations made it possible, said Williams. A graduate of TU, Hayes is a retired manufacturing executive and real-estate entrepreneur.

Among the art they collect is the work of Texas prodigy Amanda Dunbar, who will attend the dedication. Several of her colorful paintings, from the Hayes' personal collection, will be displayed.

The gallery's first show continues through Oct. 16 with whimsical prints and paintings by Janet Ballweg, a member of the faculty at Bowling Green State University.

Her work depicts literal domestic still-lives that allude to the mind and soul.

Last month, TU dedicated the new $2.6 million Hertzer Technology Center, adjacent to the Hayes Center.

The Hayes Center for the Arts is on Miami Street, across from the Gillmor Student Center on the campus of Tiffin University, north of downtown Tiffin. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and by appointment. Information: 419-448-3427.
