Scholarship winners present organ recital

The winners of the 2017 Toledo Americal Guild of Organists Scholarship competition are Skyelar Raiti, right, Kurt Muller, Jordan Brosten, Enrico Tabernero, and Benjamin Garst.

The Toledo Chapter of the American Guild of Organists has announced the winners of its 2017 scholarship competition. Monetary awards of $100 to $500 went to five area high school students to assist with further organ studies.

Recipients were junior Skyelar Raiti (student of Mark Mathias), junior Jordan Brosten (student of Pam Davis), senior Kurt Muller, senior Enrico Tabernero, and freshman Benjamin Garst (all students of Charlotte Mariasy).

Each student was required to play two selections of repertoire and a hymn. They were also required to play a hymn at sight as selected by the audition proctor.

Judges for the auditions, which were held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, were Joan McConnell, Randolph Currie, and Paul Monachino. The winners will perform on the organization’s student recital at the same location at 3 p.m. March 8.

■ The Maumee Community Band, under the baton of Kevin Heidbreder, presents a free holiday concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Maumee United Methodist Church, 405 Sackett St., Maumee.

■ Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral hosts “A Christmas Carol Sing” lead by the Cathedral Choir and accompanied by brass ensemble, string quartet, and pipe organ. All in attendance are invited to sing. The St. Aloysius Parish Handbell Ensemble from Bowling Green will be the featured musical guest. ■ The Voices of Harmony Barbershop Chorus celebrates the “Sounds of the Season” in an a cappella holiday concert assisted by the Bowling Green High School Madrigal Singers and Prototype Barbershop Quartet. ■ WGTE FM 91.3 is airing a number of programs as a musical complement to the holiday season. It begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday with a broadcast of the Toledo Jazz Orchestra’s “Holiday Concert” featuring well-known holiday tunes. Following at 8 p.m., the Paul Winter Consort performs its “36th annual Winter Solstice Celebration” from the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York.

■ The Toledo Symphony had a very successful Giving Tuesday Campaign on Nov. 28. In addition to raising more than $35,000 in gifts from various donors, the ensemble received a $1 million pledge from an anonymous donor, who will make the gift in two phases: $500,000 this year and next.

The first phase will provide direct support for the orchestra’s operating budget. The second will serve as a matching grant during the orch estra’s 75th anniversary season in 2018-19, providing a dollar-for-dollar match for any new donations secured during the anniversary year.
