UT explores magic of Purcell's 'Fairy Queen'

The University of Toledo is sponsoring a weekend-long workshop exploring baroque style and performance technique. The experience will revolve around an in-depth study of Henry Purcell’s The Fairy Queen.

The piece is a loose adaptation of the plot of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, composed three years before Purcell’s death. Considered lost, it was rediscovered in the early 20th century and since has undergone a number of revivals.

Led by area baroque expert Omaldo Perez, director of music ministries at Zoar Lutheran Church, Perrysburg, participants will spend three days preparing the masterwork for performance in concert at 3 p.m. Sept. 9.

The schedule includes four sessions: 4 to 9 p.m. Sept. 6; 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 7; and Sept. 8 with times to be announced, all to be held in the Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall, 1910 West Rocket Dr. on the campus of UT.

Enterprise St., Bowling Green. The recital is sponsored by the Toledo Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

■ The free Music at the Market Concert Series in conjunction with the Perrysburg Farmers Market concludes with a “Throw Back Thursday concert,” featuring a reunion by the Original Killer Flamingos. ■ The BGSU Choral Society invites community members to audition for membership for the upcoming concert season which will include performances of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms (Oct. 21), the “Joyous Sounds” holiday program (Nov. 27), a Good Friday Choral Evensong (April 19), and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (May 5).

A Toledo School for the Arts student plays with Glass City Steel Drum band in a past performance. The Community Steel Drum Band is open to all high school and college-age students, with no audition or experience required.

■ The newest ensemble at the University of Toledo, the Community Steel Drum Band is seeking members and is open to all high school and college-aged students, no audition or experience required. ■ The Good Company Vocal Ensemble is welcoming new members. Under the direction of Karen T. Biscay, the SATB ensemble surveys a variety of vocal styles and literature.
