Methodists mark tricentennial of Wesley's birth
Wesley: founder was born in 1703.
( THE BLADE )

Methodists around the world will celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of their denomination's founder, John Wesley, Tuesday with conferences, festivals, and special worship services.

An ecumenical observance at London's Lincoln Cathedral will be available that day for viewing on the Internet at www.bbc.co.uk/lincolnshire beginning at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time.

On the same day, a group of young British Methodists will start a 12-day walking pilgrimage in Wesley's honor from Lincoln Cathedral to Llandudno, North Wales, site of this year's British Methodist Conference.

Born on June 17, 1703, in Epworth, England, Wesley, an ordained priest in the Church of England, never set out to found a denomination, but by the time he died in 1791, he had amassed 70,000 followers.

The term "Methodism" came from his description of his approach to Christianity: the methodical pursuit of holiness. "A Methodist," he wrote, "is one who lives according to the method laid down in the Bible."

Interfaith Blood Drive honors Bishop Hoffman

This year's Interfaith Blood Drive will be in memory of Bishop James Hoffman, the longtime leader of the Toledo Catholic Diocese who died Feb. 8.

A service commemorating the late bishop will be held at 7:30 p.m. June 22 at Corpus Christi University Parish, 2955 Dorr St. The blood drive is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 21 and 22 at Grace Lutheran Church, 4441 Monroe St.

Lutherans to participate in `Beautiful Feet' relay

Thirty-nine congregations and several ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in the Toledo area will take part in Beautiful Feet, a 121-mile, 32-hour, 45-stop relay from Thursday until June 22.

During the relay, each church or group will carry a Bible two to four miles to the site of the next stop on the route.

The event will raise money for those preparing to serve as pastors here and in the Northwestern Ohio Synod's partner diocese of Tanzania in Africa.

First openly gay bishop elected by Episcopalians

In defiance of longstanding Christian tradition, the Diocese of New Hampshire has elected the first openly gay bishop in the history of the Episcopal Church USA.

Meeting in the state capital of Concord, delegates to the annual state convention chose the Rev. V. Gene Robinson over three other candidates on only the second ballot.

Father Robinson's election still must be ratified by a two-thirds vote at the triennial General Convention of the ECUSA when it meets next month in Minneapolis.

"It's just gratifying to get this kind of affirmation from people who have known me for the past 28 years," said Father Robinson, 56, principal assistant to Bishop Douglas E. Theuner for the last 17 years.

Formerly married with two daughters, Father Robinson now lives with a companion.

The election was hailed in some quarters as a major breakthrough for gay rights, but condemned by others as a rebellion against God's created order.
