Ted Turner will address UT law commencement
Media mogul Ted Turner has accepted an invitation to speak May 8 at the University of Toledo law school’s commencement ceremony.
Mr. Turner, 65, did not attend the college, but UT’s board of trustees is scheduled to vote on awarding him an honorary law degree at its meeting next week.
Phillip Closius, law school dean, said he hopes the man who launched the cable channel CNN and the Goodwill Games will offer some inspiration and provide a good example for graduates.
"We’re always on the lookout for occasions to bring in people that we think are interesting and have some national prominence," he said.
Mr. Turner, who was born in Cincinnati, founded Turner Broadcasting System, which later merged with Time Warner, Inc.
He oversaw the company’s professional sports teams, baseball’s Atlanta Braves, basketball’s Atlanta Hawks, and hockey’s Atlanta Thrashers.
Mr. Turner also has a history as a philanthropist, sponsoring numerous efforts to protect the environment and reduce overpopulation through Turner Foundation, Inc. He also committed up to $1 billion to the United Nations Foundation.
