Michigans Vreba-Hoff case to wait till Feb. 15
LANSING — The state’s contempt-of-court case against Vreba-Hoff Dairy LLC has been continued to Feb. 15.
Ingham County Circuit Court Judge James R. Giddings spent about an hour yesterday listening to arguments about whether the company violated a landmark 2004 agreement it made with Michigan regulators by illegally spreading manure from its two megafarms south of here.
The state is seeking a 40 percent reduction in the combined herd, from 6,050 cows to 3,700 cows.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, in charge of protecting area streams, has said the companies have shown they are not capable of handling the number of cows they have.
Vreba-Hoff built a $1 million treatment facility for the cow waste following its Dec. 22, 2004, agreement with the state. The treatment system was envisioned as a model for other such operations in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana, but has been beset by mechanical failures.
Vreba-Hoff’s agricultural consulting business in Wauseon is one of the region’s largest.
