Mayor uses handicap parking slot

Mayor Carty Finkbeiner was given a parking ticket after he parked in a handicapped parking space at the Westgate Building in West Toledo.

The mayor was at the building, across Central Avenue from the Westgate Village Shopping Center, for a 45-minute massage therapy appointment for an Achilles tendon injury.

Mr. Finkbeiner parked in the handicapped space early Friday evening because he wanted to keep his dog, Scout, from overheating in the sun, Brian Schwartz, the mayor’s spokesman, said.

According to Mr. Schwartz, the mayor said he parked in the handicapped space because it was the only spot in the shade and he was leaving his dog in the car with the rear windows open. The mayor said his injured Achilles tendon was another reason for parking in the handicapped spot.

Every other handicapped space was open and most of the regular parking spots were in the sun.

The fine for parking in a handicapped space is $100, according to the Downtown Toledo Parking Authority.
The mayor has said that he intends to pay the ticket.
