Eagle Point Preserve expands public access

SANDUSKY - A task force aimed at promoting and protecting eagles in Eagle Point Preserve has recommended public access to the site be expanded during the upcoming mating season.

The task force assists with managing the Community Foundation Preserve at Eagle Point off State Rt. 6 between Sandusky and Huron, Ohio.

Some parts were closed during last year's nesting season.

Erie MetroParks and the task force will expand public access this year, while protecting the breeding habitat.

Park officials said the eagles don't seem to mind the nearby trains, planes, and automobiles, but can be easily disturbed by humans walking near their nest.

The accessible areas include South Meadow, Stockdale Arboretum, and nearby trails, drives, and parking lots.

The areas will be open from 8 a.m. to dark and a gate on Cleveland Road will be open during these times.

The closed areas will reopen this summer or sooner, as determined by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Wildlife.

Erie MetroParks offers supervised group tours and programs.
