Malfunctioning heater spews smoke through Monclova Township school, church
BLADE STAFF
Monclova Christian Academy was on a two-hour delay Friday morning after a diesel-fueled heater in the academy’s new school building adjoining the Monclova Road Baptist Church malfunctioned, filling both structures with smoke, authorities said.
There were no injuries.
No one was at the church and the school building at 7819 Monclova Rd. when an automatic fire alarm there sounded about 4:50 a.m., Monclova Township Deputy Fire Chief Michael George said. The school building is still under construction and classes are being held in the church’s gym.
Upon arrival, fire crews found heavy smoke in both buildings and used thermal imaging equipment to locate the malfunctioning heater.
They found the heater 15 minutes later on the first floor of the two-story school building. It was blowing out smoke but was not on fire, Chief George said.
Firefighters then turned off the heater and aired the buildings. The damage estimate was not available, the chief said.
