3 people, 1 firm to be honored at Diamante Awards

Three members of the community and a corporation will be honored tonight during the annual Diamante Awards ceremony at Owens Community College for their achievements and service to the Latino community.

The award recipients include a high school teacher, a university professor, a college student, and a corporation that has sponsored the event the previous four years.

The ceremony will be at 6 p.m. at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts on Owens' Perrysburg Township campus.

Albert Flores of Toledo will receive the Latino Adult Leadership Award for his 33-year commitment to area youth.

As a teacher at Libbey High School, Mr. Flores stresses the importance of education and pursuing college by helping with financial aid and guiding students to scholarship opportunities.

He also tutors student athletes at the University of Toledo.

The Friend of the Latino Community Award will go to Mark Pickett of Fremont, a UT civil engineering professor.

Mr. Pickett has been a longtime advocate of creating education opportunities for children of Latino migrant workers.

He has created programs to help those students and partnerships with agencies such as the National Science Foundation and Ohio Department of Education to help offset the costs for teachers to participate.

Oriana Orozco of Toledo will receive the Latina Youth Leadership Award.

She is a junior at Lourdes College, pursuing a bachelor's degree in marketing. She is a leader in the school's Latino community.

She was elected president of the Lourdes College Latino Student Union in 2007 and has organized fund-raisers to help migrant families in northwest Ohio.

This year's recipient of the Corporation/Community Agency Award is the Chrysler Foundation, which has sponsored the Diamante Awards for four years and contributed $100,000 in support during that time.

In addition to the four awards, scholarships will be presented to more than 40 students from the partnering institutions - Owens, UT, Bowling Green State University, and Lourdes.

Tickets for the Diamante Awards ceremony are $85 per person. For more information, call 567-661-7510.
