Baby cries, saves family from house fire
BLADE STAFF
A family of six escaped unhurt after a baby's cry alerted them to a fire in their South Toledo home early Monday, authorities said.
'Occupants told us their baby cried, they got up, smelled smoke, and everybody got out,' Battalion Fire Chief Christine Davis said.
Two adults and four children, including the baby, were out of the single-family house at 2498 Broadway when fire crews arrived about 4:49 a.m. and found the fire in the ceiling insulation of the second-floor bedroom, Chief Davis said.
Firefighters had the fire under control about 5 a.m. but not before it had spread to the attic of the two-story wood frame house from the bedroom ceiling. The fire had started from an electrical short-circuit, the battalion chief said.
Damage from the fire was estimated at $12,000, she said.
The Lucas County Auditor's Web site lists the owner of the house, which was built in 1915, as James Caldwell.
The Red Cross helped the family find shelter, the chief said.
