North Toledo box plant to close; 70 to lose jobs

A North Toledo packaging plant that made boxes for area industries will close by the end of the year because of a lack of work, a spokesman for the company said yesterday.

About 70 people employed at the factory at 1240 Matzinger Rd. by Greif Inc. will lose their jobs in December, company spokesman Deb Strohmaier said.

“We’ve been looking at the whole network of container plants and adjusting the network to where the business is, and the business in the Toledo area hasn’t been good for a long time,” she said. “We just can’t keep losing money.”

Greif is headquartered in Delaware, Ohio, near Columbus.

Among the plant’s former customers was toilet maker American Standard Co. Inc.’s plant in Tiffin, which closed this year, Ms. Strohmaier said.
