Toledo mother sues over sons death at Bettsville quarry
TIFFIN — A Toledo woman has filed a wrongful-death suit against the village of Bettsville stemming from her son’s drowning last year in a local quarry.
In a complaint filed in Seneca County Common Pleas Court, Rosalinda Contreraz is seeking damages of $25,000 or more from the Seneca County village, its recreation board, and a lifeguard on duty Aug. 3, 2007, when her 15-year-old son, Santos Garcia, drowned while swimming in the Eels Park quarry.
The suit alleges the water depth at the quarry increased dramatically and the village failed to maintain the quarry’s floor to establish predictable water depths or post warning signs for swimmers.
The suit also claims a lifeguard on duty ignored another boy who notified her that young Garcia had gone under and not surfaced.
