BG, Toledo teams fight trends, soar in standings in Blade's School Stock Contest

The bear market took a bite out of most portfolios in The Blade's 2009 School Stock Contest again last week.

But the big story was a pair of big movers.

The "Ching" team from Bowling Green High School jumped from 17th place to fifth place. And "DaWorks," from Toledo's Horizon Science Academy-Springfield rocketed to 39th from 90th.

"I don't recall anybody ever moving that much," said Matt Faltys, vice president and director of portfolio management for Fifth Third Bank. The bank is tabulating results and co-sponsoring the contest with The Blade's Newspaper in Education program.

DaWorks' mythical portfolio was one of only eight of 101 entered in the contest that picked up ground last week. It increased 4.6 percent, but still remained in the red overall at $37,377. When the contest began Jan. 23, each team had hypothetical investments of $40,000 divided evenly among four stocks - two on the New York Stock Exchange and two on the Nasdaq market.

The contest includes 1,150 students from 26 schools throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. At the midpoint of the 14-week contest on March 13, teams may change any or all of their stocks. The contest ends

May 1.

The top spots last week were held by two teams from St. Joan of Arc School, Toledo. "Oishii" held onto its first-place spot with a portfolio value of $42,966. And "Cod," at $42,780, rose to second from third.

The first-place team is up 7.4 percent for the year - but down 2.6 percent last week.

The 11 eighth-grade math students in the team, supervised by teacher Jeremy Lewton, hold Google Inc., FirstEnergy Corp., Visa Inc., and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.

Many portfolios have suffered in the ongoing bear market, with just 11 in positive territory overall. Just two teams in the top 10 gained last week.

"If they were positive, they were just barely positive," Mr. Faltys said. The lone exception was DaWorks, which soared nearly 5 percent on the strength of gains by U.S. Bancorp. Such volatility shouldn't be surprising given current conditions, Mr. Faltys added.

Third and fourth place were held by a pair of teams from Sylvania Franciscan Academy, Sylvania: STA, and Kelter.

Members are already talking about which slumping stocks to replace, said eighth-grade teacher Della Ward, who supervises the teams with school librarian Roberta Handel.

"They're positive," Ms. Ward said. "Their attitude is, 'We didn't go down. We're staying the same.'•"

The team whose portfolio value has grown the most by the close of trading on May 1 wins $250 for the school and $250 for the team. Second place receives $250 for the school, and third place gets $100 for the school.
