That gave the $Makers$ a $943 lead over the "CoD" team from St. Joan of Arc school, which remained in second place with $52,681, up nearly 8 percent for the week. A new team took third place last week: the "$Bull$" from Luckey Elementary school. Its portfolio was $49,061, up 7 percent.

Lynn Medlen, the teacher who oversees the team of seven boys who make up the $Makers$ team, said her eighth graders became minicelebrities at school after reaching first place and busily spent much of last week keeping tabs on their portfolio.

It consists of Google Inc., Dick's Sporting Goods, the Finish Line, and World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. It is up 34 percent since the Jan. 23 start of the contest, which ends May 1.

"The principal made a big

announcement that they were in first place and that's all they could talk about," she said. "We didn't get a lot of math done last week."

The third-place $Bull$ has risen because of two changes it made at the halfway point of the contest. It kept Goldman Sachs and Northern Trust for its portfolio but replaced First Solar Inc. with Mastercard and Honda Motor Co. with Gamestop Inc. Since that change, its portfolio value has grown from $42,440 to $49,061, a gain of 16 percent over three weeks.

Neither $Maker$ nor CoD made changes.

The CoD team's portfolio has Gamestop, Kohl's Inc., Dick's Sporting Goods, and Netflix Inc.

This year's contest has 101 teams from 26 schools and involves 1,150 students. Under the rules, teams submit in advance a portfolio of four U.S. stocks with each stock worth at least $5 a share. A fictitious $40,000 was divided evenly among the choices.

The winner is the team whose portfolio makes the biggest gains as of May 1. First place wins $250 for the school and $250 for the team. Second place receives $250 for the school, and third place gets $100 for the school.

Fifth Third Bank, a co-sponsor of the contest with The Blade's Newspaper in Education program, is tabulating the weekly results.
