Article published Wednesday, August 5, 2009 Headmaster named for Sylvania Franciscan Academy BLADE STAFF
A former administrator with the Lucas County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities is the new headmaster at Sylvania Franciscan Academy.
Richard Kohler, 53, is a member of the graduate faculty for Lourdes College's Master of Education program, and will retain those duties while taking over management of the academy's general operations and guiding its future expansion and enhancement.
Mr. Kohler is a former assistant superintendent of the Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disability Services in Dayton, along with his prior involvement with the MRDD office in Lucas County.
"As headmaster, Dr. Kohler will play an integral role in establishing the academy as a learning environment unparalleled in this region," said Robert C. Helmer, president of Lourdes College, which took over academy management last month. "The students and faculty at Lourdes and the academy will continue to experience the benefits of this innovative collaboration."
The Sylvania Franciscan Academy is a private, Catholic elementary school founded by the Sisters of St. Francis for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The Franciscan sisters have sponsored the academy for 36 years and Lourdes College for 51, but until recently kept the two institutions largely separate.
Mr. Kohler holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Xavier University in Cincinnati, then received a Doctorate of Education from the University of Cincinnati. He is as a deanery counselor for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo's Child and Adult Sexual Abuse Panel and has served on the board of directors for the Richland Academy of the Performing Arts.
