Pilot in serious condition after crashing 'powered parachute'

RIGA, Mich. - A 56-year-old Riga man was hospitalized in serious condition after crashing his aircraft Monday night on Bierman Road in Riga Township in Lenawee County, authorities said.

Gail Papenhagen was flying his "powered parachute" red Six Chuter 2000 about 8 p.m. when he crashed the aircraft on the road about a quarter mile east of Rodesiler Highway.

He was taken to Toledo Hospital where he was listed in serious condition, according to information released Tuesday by the Adrian post of the Michigan State Police.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.
