EPA to probe buried lead traced to TV tube plant

OTTAWA, Ohio — Federal environmental regulators are to reveal plans Thursday for an expanded probe into buried lead they have traced back to the former GTE/Sylvania/Philips facility that once manufactured television tubes.

The information will be released at an open-house style meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Ottawa-Glandorf High School, 630 Glendale Ave., Ottawa.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s regional office in Chicago said it will discuss results of soil samples, one of which exceeded safety standards, taken in April from four residential properties.

The manufacturing facility had once used the four sites in question to bury lead-contaminated glass and waste, possibly as far back as the 1940s, the EPA said.

Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting or contact Virginia Narsete, a U.S. EPA community involvement coordinator, at 312-886-4359 or narsete.virginia@epa.gov.
